Canadian farmer who took on Monsanto dies aged 89 by Staff Writers Montreal (AFP) Oct 14, 2020 Percy Schmeiser, a Canadian farmer who became internationally known for leading a legal battle against US agrochemical giant Monsanto, has died at the age of 89, his son said Wednesday. "Dad passed away yesterday. He did have a mild form of Parkinson's," John Schmeiser told AFP, confirming CBC news reports. "Percy Schmeiser passed away yesterday at age 89. Telling his story over the last few years has been a privilege," tweeted Daniel Bekerman, producer of the film "Percy", which was inspired by the court battle and is currently in theaters. Monsanto accused Schmeiser in 1998 of planting his fields with a genetically modified canola seeds that it owned, and which he had not paid to use. Schmeiser denied he had used the seeds, saying they may have either blown into his field or fallen from a farmer's passing truck. The case went all the way to Canada's Supreme Court, which ruled against Schmeiser in 2004. ast/et/dax/st/ft
